Most pillows come in one shape and one height, and everyone is expected to make it work. Pillowise starts from the other end. Your shoulders and neck are measured first, and the pillow is chosen to match.
The pillow is contoured rather than flat, with a different profile along each long edge, so there is a side for sleeping on your back and a deeper side for sleeping on yours.
It is a Dutch system, developed in 2003 by physiotherapist Thijs van der Hilst, and it is now carried by more than five thousand healthcare practitioners worldwide. Sunshine Wellness stocks it on Preserve Drive.
A pillow has one job: to fill the space between the mattress and your head so your neck stays in line with the rest of your spine. How much space that is depends entirely on your build, and on how you sleep.
Broad shoulders leave a bigger gap than narrow ones. Sleeping on your side leaves a bigger gap than sleeping on your back. A soft mattress lets your shoulder sink in and closes the gap again.
Three measurements are taken at the fitting, shoulder width, neck circumference and neck height, along with how you sleep and how firm your mattress is. Those go into the Pillowise sizing algorithm, which returns your size.
Once the fitting is done you are given a colour, and that colour is your pillow from then on. The colour is the piping on the cover, so your size stays visible at a glance.
